Mikko Rikala’s works represent research into spatiality and temporality, emerging from both philosophical as well as scientific, nature-related thoughts. Throughout his career, he focuses on different conceptual ways of visualizing the passage of time and the cycles of nature. Employing minimal aesthetics, he contemplates the intricate interconnectedness of existence, exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural world and the essential role of memory in shaping identity. His works are born from a posture of attentive listening and observation of his surroundings, an approach which allows for deeper meanings to emerge from the mundane. His multisensory works invite viewers to engage with their own memories and personal histories, blurring the boundaries between past and present, self and surroundings, and revealing the complex tapestry of human experience.
