About the Artist

Tanisha Raj

Born in the vibrant city of Hong Kong to Indian parents, I've lived a truly international life. My childhood was split between London and Hong Kong, followed by studies in the USA, a stint in Berlin, and now, I call Lisbon home. As an artist, I carve abstract, intricate patterns into painted MDF wood panels. My professional journey began as a strategist at a global management consultancy. Today, when I'm not immersed in my art, I work as a freelance strategic consultant for both corporations and NGOs. When I first encountered woodcut printmaking, I quickly realised that I was more captivated by the wood as my canvas than the printing process itself. During university, I began experimenting with painting wood panels using Sumi ink and carving them, with no intention of rolling ink or creating prints. My work involves detailed, pattern-rich pieces that explore ritual, repetition, and the quiet power of mark-making. I find inspiration in the simplicity and profound symbolism of circles. From sacred mandalas in Hindu and Buddhist art to intricate patterns in traditional textiles. I explore this further through cell membranes, playing with microscopic textures and juxtaposing fluidity with strength. I've evolved my work to explore bold colours and geometric abstraction. My technique brings together three key elements: expressive colour combinations, clean geometric forms, and intricate pattern work – each piece a unique exploration of these elements.
