Joy Makon paints observations of contemporary daily life in the medium of traditional watercolor. Her landscapes and seascapes, often with figures in the composition, are detailed explorations of light and shadow, with a dramatic sense of space. Makon’s locations always include some natural element whether in a local park or gardens in Europe. Her early influences were Eakins, Peale and the Impressionists. Makon has a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia where she studied with John Moore, Stanislaw Zagorski and Joseph Scorsone. She also studied at School of Visual Art and Pratt Institute in New York. Her work has been shown in juried shows, including the American Watercolor Society, and can be found in collections throughout the U.S. She has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers and the Society of Illustrators for her work as a magazine art director. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
